Columbarium News

A plat map of our columbarium is shown on the link below.  It shows that about 1/3 of the niches have been taken.  So Buy Soon...and get a place for your vase!

The plat map also gives the niche prices.  These were increased $100 effective July 1, 2012.  Based on the number of urns a niche can hold, the new price is between $700 - $2000.  As has always been the case, our niche price includes the urns, brass plates and engraving.  An installment payment plan is available if desired.

Other cemetery or church columbariums usually have niches holding only 1-2 urns.  And they typically charge $1000-$2000 for the niche alone.  They also charge extra for the urns, brass nameplates, engraving, and the labor for opening and closings.  So ours is a real bargain.

When I built our columbarium 6 years ago, I decided it should be different.  That's why it looks like a nice piece of furniture rather than a wall of mailboxes at the U.S. Post Office!  Ours also has family sized niches holding 2-15 urns.  We have a total of 70 niches of various sizes (2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10 and 15) having a collective capacity of about 325 urns.

Carolyn and I, and Dick Schmidt shared the initial cost of the materials and special tools (around $3000). I provided the labor.  Since then, Carolyn and I have made additional donations as needed to cover the costs of the reserve urn supply, brass plates, engraving, and for the new Remembrance Wall above the columbarium (cedar wood for the maple leafs and branches, brass plates, engraving, wallpaper, etc.).

So, the columbarium and Remembrance Wall are being provided at no cost to Mt. Pisgah.  And, we will continue to provide this support in the future.  We enjoy doing this, and it is not a burden.  It is an honor and a blessing to do this for our wonderful church family.

The proceeds from the columbarium and Remembrance Wall will ultimately total around $75,000.  These proceeds are currently being directed to help fund our youth programs, primarily their trips.  So the recent niche price increase is not for the added costs of urns and brass plates.  It is for the ever-rising expenses of our youth programs.

Here's one final note:  When visiting Pastors or members of other congregations see our columbarium, invariably they are impressed, and would like to have one for their church.  Because of this interest, our columbarium and Remembrance Wall may soon be featured in The Lutheran magazine.

To respond to the many anticipated inquiries, I'm now preparing an illustrated "How to Build a Columbarium" booklet on the costs, benefits, design and sketches giving detailed dimensions.  Then, other old, retired guys with a hammer and saw can build a columbarium and/or a Remembrance Wall for their church!
